Patrick Allen Clifton ParkPatrick Allen, kind and loving husband to Marie Grace Costa for 38 years, passed from this life on Sunday, November 24, 2013. Patrick was predeceased by his parents, Jerry and Christine Allen, and his parents-in-law, Frank and Elizabeth Costa. In addition to Marie, Patrick is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Patricia, with whom he shared a California childhood, and their daughters, Michelle and Danielle, of Alhambra, California. Patrick embraced Marie's family, and was loved by them in return. His brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frank and Jane Costa, their children, Michael (Beatriz), Matthew (Heather Olson), Elizabeth (Thomas Tomaselli), and David and Barbara Smith and their children, Dane and Bradley, enjoyed his quiet company. Patrick, Dean of Education at Union Graduate College, was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, AS English, and Indiana University, MA English, PhD English and American Studies. Patrick's long and varied teaching career included positions at Coe College, Union College, and Shenendehowa High School. He consulted in various capacities for Educational Testing Service and his professional activities include chairing the Subcommittee of the Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching in New York State. Additionally, he was the author of numerous articles on sustaining teacher development. In May, 2013, Patrick was awarded the NYSUT Award for Excellence in Education in recognition of his efforts on behalf of National Board Certification and NBC teachers in New York State. During his tenure as Dean of Education at Union Graduate College, Patrick saw many state and federal plans for educational reform come (and go). Through it all, he maintained that well prepared teachers are crucial to any meaningful and sustained effort to improve schools. His respect for teachers and the work they do was evident, and genuine. Patrick's legacies are many: his competency and vision, his exceptional commitment to public education, his non-judgmental counsel, but his lasting legacy will always be that of a gentle and lovely man. Patrick and Marie have made an anatomical gift to Albany Medical Center to help educate future health care professionals. There will he a celebration of Patrick's life in the spring. In lieu of flowers, Marie requests you consider a memorial contribution to the Dean Patrick Allen Endowed Scholarship Fund at Union Graduate College, 80 Nott Terrace, Schenectady, NY 12308.
