Walter H. Raab SchenectadyMr. Walter H. Raab of Colonie died Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. Walter was the son of the late Florence and Harrison Raab of Ghent, NY. He was a graduate of Hudson High School and served overseas in the Signal Corps Unit as a staff sergeant of the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a recipient of four Bronze Service Stars and a Belgium Fourragere. Raised on a farm in Omi (Ghent), NY, Walter was known as a devoted gardener coaxing the poorest soil into producing bountiful crops of berries, vegetables, and his prize-winning sunflowers. For 35 years Walter worked at Albany International, while also serving as an evening sales associate for Two Guys Department Store in Menands and Schenectady for 15 years. As an active member of the Boyd Hilton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7062 in Altamont, NY, Walter performed the duties of Chaplain. He received the Commander's Award for Outstanding Dedication. He also repeatedly broke records for Buddy Poppy Campaign collections, personally taking in over 50% of donations collected. He was a member of the Lisha's Kill Reformed Church, where he volunteered as an usher for many years. He was also a former member of the West Ghent Reformed Church. Walter H. Raab was born in Valatie, NY on March 18, 1920. He lived in Colonie from 1947 until December, 2012. Most recently, he resided at Kingsway Manor Assisted Living. He was the husband of the late Cornelia Rowley Raab. He is survived by his loving children, Paula Sue (Robert) Farquharson, Timothy H. Raab, Christina (Arthur) Miller; his five grandchildren, Adam, Ian, Sara, Sean, Weston, and several nieces and nephews. A service is set for Friday, July 26, 11 a.m. at Lisha's Kill Reformed Church, 2131 Central Ave., Schenectady, NY 12304. Burial will take place in West Ghent Reformed Church Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 25, 5 to 8 p.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady, NY 12304.
