BERNARD MEDINA

Obituary Condolences

Bernard Medina Barney Medina was a fireman. First and foremost, he was a fireman. He was a husband and a father. He was an artist and a photographer. He was a provider and a supporter. He was a man who encouraged his children, helped make his community safe, and loved his family. In 1945, after returning from Europe at the end of World War II, Barney and many other veterans decided to do something good for their community and formed the Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Department. They organized raffles, fundraisers, and bought their first fire truck - a used truck from Wisconsin. For the next 50 years of his life, Barney was a fireman, the secretary for the department, and then a trustee. For those 50 years, a phone devoted to the fire station hung in Barney and June's bedroom. In the early years, business meetings were held in their dining room. The PGFD archives were stored in their home. Born in Burbank, South Dakota in 1921, the Medina family moved to Pingree Grove. In 1950, Bernard Medina married June Lorenz in Pingree Grove, Illinois and spent his life there with her. They had eight children: Linda (Gary) Leitner, daughter Nicole; Marcia Medina, son Matthew Hochleutner; Patti (Clark) Stojan, daughters Rachel Duffy & Martha Merritt; Thomas Medina, daughter Amber & sons Brandyn and Nathaniel; William (Joanne) Medina, sons Noah, Daniel & Tomas; Margo (Bill) Block, son Scott & daughter Sarah; Michael Medina (Lynee Alves), son Jackson & daughter Meredith; and Kaye Medina-Meyer (Steve Meyer) daughters Blythe & Lilith, son Alec. Barney and June also have five great-grandchildren. "Our father encouraged us to know and appreciate art." He shared many different forms of artistic appreciation with his children - from drawing and sketching to Japanese brush painting, music and reading. Many of his children and grandchildren became talented photographers, following in his footsteps. His artistic blood runs deep in his children. Although he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Design in Chicago with the intention of going into radio, he took a job at Borden's Ice Cream as an ice cream mix man. For 35 years he made ice cream. He supported his family and lived in their first home with his wife June for 62 years. He is survived by his siblings Virginia Tharp, Mary Thies, Eugene "Bud" (Judi) Medina and Darlene Maalo; brothers-in-law John Schmitz and Edward Radloff; and several nieces and nephews. Bernard Medina was preceded in death by his parents Tiburcio and Ramona Medina, daughter Patti, and sisters Pauline Nygaard and Marguerite Radloff. The children of Bernard Medina will have a few hours of Remembering Barney on Sunday, June 2 from 1 to 4 PM in the Gathering Room at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 195 Nesler Road, Elgin IL. Private services will be graveside for the family only. Memorials in honor of Barney may be made to the Pingree Grove & Countryside Fire Protection District - Ambulance Service. Arrangements were made by Fredrick Funeral Home, Hampshire, 847-683-2711.
