CARL W. JOHNSON Obituary
Carl W. Johnson, formerly of Arlington Heights for 44 years. Carl has resided in Mount Prospect since June 2003 with his wife Linda. Visitation for Carl W. Johnson, age 86, will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013 at the Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road (½ block east of Route 53), Rolling Meadows. A service of Celebration will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Mount Prospect, IL, where he will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment at Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park, IL. Born June 14 (Flag Day), 1927, in Chicago, he died Sept. 1, 2013 at his Mount Prospect home. His deceased parents were Carl Sr. and Violette (nee McKenzie). His infant brother, David, was called to Heaven in 1936 when he was 11 months old. Carl graduated from Sayre Grade School on Chicago's northwest side and subsequently graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1945. After WWII ended, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945, serving in Korea for one year in 1946. Following his University of Illinois graduation in 1951 with a BS Degree in Marketing/Management, he worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company. His 34 year management career at Illinois Bell included assignments in customer service, personnel, and installation/repair organizations. He also was transferred to the AT&T Controllers Department in New York City for 2½ years, 1956-58. After his retirement in 1985 from Illinois Bell, he served as the first Human Resources Manager at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights. During this period, 1986-1992, he initiated many of the programs and policies currently utilized by the LHSA. It was during this period that his lovely wife, Phyllis (nee Zellmer) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She was subsequently a resident at the Lutheran Home for eight years until her death in 2002. Phyllis and Carl were married for 46 lovely years. Phyllis, a former Illinois Bell supervisor, was a wonderful homemaker, a loving wife and devoted mother to Nancy, Barbara, Carol and Bill. Carl was also an active member of Faith Lutheran Church for 44 years. He developed and nurtured the Foundation/Memorial Fund concept and chaired the Committee for 8 years. He was Board of Elders chairman for 2 years and he enjoyed singing in Faith Choir for 15 years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Home and Services, The Lutheran Home Board and the Lutheran Foundation Board. He was Chairman of the Walcamp Council for eight years. He was fortunate to always be able to give back to the community, including as a Little League Baseball coach. Carl is survived by his second wife; Linda (nee Jennings). He is also survived by four loving children, Nancy (Eric) Ritter of Louisville, Ky., Barbara (Greg) Webb of Dallas, Texas, Carol Poplawski of Arlington Heights, and C. William Johnson (Barbara) of Carol Stream. Grandchildren include Jeffrey Ritter and Sarah Lewis, Ashley Huber, Gregory and Zach Webb, Lauren and Christopher Poplawski, and Allison, Nicole and Kaitlyn Johnson. The many blessings of Carl's life included his loving parents, the love and commitment of two caring wives, and the love of his four children, and the enthusiastic adoration of 15 grandchildren. He was recently blessed with great grandchildren Cameron, Noah and Austin. Carl was also fortunate to enjoy the affection of Linda's family including her four sons, Bradley Schubert (Heidi), Jeffrey Schubert (Lauren), Timothy Schubert (Jen), and Christopher Schubert (Linsey). Additional grandchildren included Brooke, Tyler, Jacob, Hanna, Grayson and Kate.
