CARMEN COVEY ELKIN Obituary
Carmen Covey Elkin, 84, of Macomb, Illinois passed away at 12:16 AM Tuesday November 12, 2013 at the Elms Nursing Home. She was born December 15, 1928 in Jacksonville, Illinois to Howard and Thelma (Clark) Covey. She married Robert E. Elkin in Jacksonville, Illinois on August 2, 1953. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1986. She is survived by three children; Herbert (Jane) Elkin of Annapolis, Maryland; Judith (Edward) Phelan of Macomb, Illinois; Edmund (Nancy) Elkin of St. Charles, Illinois; three granddaughters; Kimberly Alice (Derek) Rice; Julia Elkin; Caroline Elkin; one great-grandson; Mason Rice; and one sister Janet (Bob) Meier of Charleston, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband; two sisters; Barbara Covey in infancy; Mary Ellen Satterfield; one brother Charles Covey. Mrs. Elkin attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville and graduated from the University of Illinois, earning BS and MS degrees in Music Education with emphasis in Piano and Organ. For over 40 Years, she played organ in five different church communities. She taught numerous piano students for over 50 years, many from the Macomb area. She was a member of Chapter K, P.E.O. the First Presbyterian Church of Macomb, American Guild of Organists (AGO) and XXMD. Carmen enjoyed spending time composing, playing and listening to music. She also dedicated time each day to her second passion Tapestry Hooking. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday November 18, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Macomb, where there will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. Reverend Kathryn Stoner-LaSala will officiate. Visitation will also be held Sunday November 17, 2013 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home, where Father Thomas Szydlik will lead a Prayer Service at 4:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the Elms Nursing Home or to the McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program. Cremation Rites will be accorded following funeral services. Burial of ashes will be held privately at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery of Macomb.
