1920 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Carol Eileen (Erickson) Smith, 93, formerly of West Lafayette, Ind., died Saturday, December 7, in Noblesville, Ind. Carol was born to the late Richard and Lempi Erickson on November 13, 1920. She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Wheaton College (Ill.) in 1942, attended medical school in Philadelphia, and aspired to be a medical missionary overseas. She was one of the first women in the U.S. to receive her seaplane pilot's license. In 1941, before her senior year of college, Carol was named national director of Girls Guild. Under her leadership, the fledgling Christian organization became Pioneer Girls and is known today as Pioneer Clubs. She served on the organization's board for thirty years. Carol married Dr. Allen Horton Smith on December 29, 1945. After raising her eight children, Carol received her master's degree in education from Butler University and taught high school science in Indianapolis Public Schools. Surviving are seven of her children, 31 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, one son, a daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter. Visitation will be held at Fisher Family Funeral Chapel, 914 Columbia Street, Lafayette, Ind., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, December 13, with a service at 1:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 628200, Orlando, FL 32862, or Pioneer Clubs, PO Box 788, Wheaton, IL 60187.
