CHARLES WALKER HOUCHINS Obituary
He was born Jan. 20, 1924, the seventh of eight children to Elna and T.Y. Houchins in Roanoke, Virginia. He left home at age 18 to serve with honor in the Navy in World War II in the South Pacific. He proudly continued in the Navy Reserve, eventually achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the war, he received his law degree at University of Virginia. His law career began in the US Justice Department, which led to a long career in the office of General Counsel for Borg-Warner Corporation in Chicago, specializing in anti-trust litigation. Charlie was active in the early civic life of Mount Prospect, helping to shape the school board, the park district and the founding boards of Northwest Community Hospital and Community Presbyterian Church. Despite a life marked by great notoriety and accomplishment, he lived a life of profound humility and with warm respect for all, regardless of class, age or station in life. He was the "common man" who deeply touched so many lives with his generosity, wit and wisdom. In the end, it was the wealth of love and admiration reflected back to him by friends and family that made him "a man of great riches". He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Betty. Together, they provided a home of nurturing love and acceptance to their children Christine, Tom and John. Also surviving them are their 6 grandchildren Jesse, Sam (Christine), Jenna (Tom), and James, Kallan and Sean (John). A memorial service will is scheduled at 11 AM Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Community Presbyterian Church in Mount Prospect. Gifts can be made to the 800-272-3900.
