Obituary Condolences

Edward W. Hardy, III a 47-year resident of Arlington Heights Edward W. Hardy, III was born on May 24, 1936 in Evanston, IL to Edward Jr. and Margaret (nee Webb) Hardy. He died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Lutheran Home & Services in Arlington Heights, IL after a long and courageous struggle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. Mr. Hardy attended Northwestern University, graduating with departmental honors in 1958. He worked in the telephone industry for 32 years and was a District Manager for Ameritech when he retired. He served on active duty for two years in the Navy and was with the USNR for 29 years, retiring as Captain. Edward was a member of MOAA, Community Bible Study (CBS), and taught physical fitness for the Arlington Heights Park District at the Arlington Heights Senior Center for 17 years. He was the 2012 Hearts of Gold - Young at Heart recipient awarded by the Village of Arlington Heights Special Events Commission. Ed competed in the Senior Olympics and received multiple medals and was an avid runner. Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years Dorothy A. "Dottie" (nee Dermody) Hardy; his children Christina M. (James) Gurke, Susan E. (William) Mathison and Edward W. Hardy, IV; his grandchildren, Joey Gurke, Billy Mathison, Samantha Mathison, Brian Mathison, and Olivia Mathison; his sister, Diana (John) Canzoneri and his brothers Ronald (Lois) and Justin Hardy. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian D. Hardy and his parents. Memorial visitation from 6:00 until 9:00 PM, Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights. Memorial Mass 9:30 AM, Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 440 S. Mitchell, Arlington Heights.
