1926 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
George W. Gatenby, age 87, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at the Autumn Leaves in Crystal Lake surrounded by the love of his family. George was born in LaGrange, IL on June 20, 1926, the son of the late Edward & Magdalene (nee Stadtfeld) Gatenby. On October 12, 1946 he married Willowdean "Dean" Backmann. Dean preceded George in death on April 24, 2005 after celebrating 58 years of marriage. George was a resident of the Carpentersville area for the past 60 years and a member of The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Elgin. He was a machinist by trade and was a former many year employee of Hills McCanna in Carpentersville. George was a very proud W.W. II U.S. Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Thomas Jefferson. He will be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. George was a loyal friend and was always there to lend a hand to anyone in need. "George and Dean are together again dancing in Heaven." Survivors include his children: Patrick (Judy Combs) Gatenby, Randy (Brenda) Gatenby, and Connie (Dino) Cozzone, a daughter-in-law: Jane Gatenby, his (10) grandchildren, (15) great-grandchildren, his sister: Janet Miller as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his parents and his wife, George was preceded in death by his son: Roger H. Gatenby, his daughter: Linda Cobb, a grandson: Ralph Kelley, a great-granddaughter: Madison C. Gatenby and his siblings: Bill, Edward, Marion, Charles, Harold, Howie, Patsy, Joseph and Barbara. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 10:00 A.M. in the Miller Funeral Home, 504 W. Main St., West Dundee with the Rev. Martin Balzer officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Dundee Township East Cemetery in East Dundee. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 P.M. in the funeral home. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to the .
