GERALD E. MELAHN Obituary
WEST DUNDEE - Gerald E. Melahn, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Thursday, April 17, 2014. Jerry was born in Elgin on December 14, 1929, the son of the late Albert E. and Clara May (nee Fitchie) Melahn. Jerry was a lifelong resident of the Dundee area, a 1947 graduate of Dundee Community High School and a 1951 graduate of the University of Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. While at the U of I, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force as an Engineering Officer and was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. In 1952 he married Virginia "Ginny" Edie. Ginny preceded Jerry in death on December 30, 2006. All of Jerry's professional career was spent in the Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration industries. He was a longtime, faithful and active member of the First United Methodist Church in West Dundee having served his church as former Chairman of the Administration Board as well as Trustee, and member of both the Finance and Building Committees. He was a life member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and a life member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. Jerry was a 55 year member, former Treasurer and Past President of the Dundee Township Lions Club. Survivors include his children: Jill Melahn-Dammyer, David A. (Lisa) Melahn and Karl E. (Brenda) Melahn. Other survivors include his grandchildren: Sean Califf, Nicholas (Chrissy) Califf, Elizabeth, Jacklyn, and Annelise Melahn, Christopher, William, Brent (Casey) and Tyler Cole. His sister: Sally Youngquist as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless good and faithful friends including his longtime friend and companion: Jean Dehmlow. In addition to his parents and wife, Jerry was preceded in death by a sisters: Kathy in infancy and JoAnn Leeming. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church, West Dundee with the Rev. Steve Mindrup officiating. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East Cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and again on Friday morning at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to either the Dundee Township Lions Club or the First United Methodist Church in West Dundee.
