REV. JOHN CHARLES TALBOT Obituary
The Rev. John Charles Talbot, 84, of Sarasota (formerly of Nokomis, FL, Summit, NJ and Palatine, IL) passed away on Jan. 5, 2014. John and his wife, Carol, moved to Bay Village (Sarasota) in 2008 after spending 15 years in Nokomis and 25 years in Summit, NJ. John received his BA from the College of Wooster (OH) and his M.Div from McCormick Theological Seminary (Chicago, IL). Six years after John founded the North Riverside Community Presbyterian Church (IL), John began the Presbyterian Church of Palatine ( IL) which grew to a congregation of approximately 1,000 by 1968. In 1968 John studied organizational behavior at UCLA which changed the course of his career from Pastor of a congregation to ecumenical industrial missioner working for the Metropolitan Corporation Mission which focused on helping industry become more conscious of human needs. This launched John into 30 years of industrial mission work and consulting to organizations undergoing major transitions. John's 30-year mission work includes the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Executive Council of the Episcopal church, Lutheran Church in America, two conferences of the Methodist Church, The American Baptist Convention, The Reformed Church in America, The Church of the Brethren, The Mennonite Church, the Dominicans (an order of the Catholic Church) as well as five seminaries, 20+ Presbyteries, 70+ congregations, and General Council of the Presbyterian Church. John's 30-year mission work in the public sector includes 14 years with the US Army Chaplain Corps as well as work with the New Jersey GSA, NJ School Admin. Assoc., and the County of Union. His organizational consulting in the private sector includes 20+ Fortune 500 clients including: PepsiCo, Exxon, Volvo, Shasta, Wells Fargo, Bristol Myers and Jewel Food Stores. John served as adjunct faculty with the Center for Continuing Education at Princeton Theological Seminary for 30 years. He also served on several boards: Chicago Presbytery, Synod of Northeast, Elizabeth Presbytery, NW Mental Health Assoc. , and the Presbyterian retirement home, Bay Village of Sarasota. John was a strong leader with a compassionate and kind heart who touched many peoples' lives. He had an innocent, curious, child-like quality coupled with a capacity for unbounded joy. He loved being on the water in any boat and enjoyed building things or completing projects around the house and yard. He was a loving and caring husband and father. John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol of Sarasota; son John (Lori) of Danville, CA; daughter Pavani ( Dino) Vergnani of Corona, CA; daughter Heather (George) Brewster; grandchildren Taylor, Haley, David and Sydney; siblings Edie (Bob) Jolly of Arlington Heights, IL and Frank (Gail) Talbot of Huntley, IL. Two memorial services will be held: Thursday, Jan. 16 at 11am in the Bay Village Auditorium and Friday, Jan. 17 at 2pm in the Venice Presbyterian Church Sanctuary. Memorial donations may be made to either Venice Presbyterian Church (111 E. Firenze Ave., Venice FL 34285) or Bay Village (8400 Vamo Rd, Sarasota, FL 34231).
