Obituary Condolences

Margaret (Powell) Struckman Margaret (Powell) Struckman passed away on Jan. 13, 2013, at the age of 91. She was born to Frank and Anna Powell on the family farm in Polo, IL on April 6, 1921. After two years, the family moved to Wayne, IL, where she lived until age 11. At that time, she moved to Manteno, IL, which she came to call her hometown. She was involved in chorus, plays and clubs in high school and was her senior class president. She attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where she received a degree in home economics and met her future husband, Bob Struckman. She taught in high schools in New Berlin, Plainfield and Bensenville, IL, before the birth of her son David in 1948. Daughter, Donna followed in January of 1951, and Margaret settled in to the traditional 1950s role of a stay-at-home mom. She followed the school activities of her children and was involved in a variety of volunteer work including Cub Scout den mother. When Donna entered high school and David entered college, she returned to teaching at Tefft Middle School in Streamwood, IL and continued there until she had accumulated 20 years as an educator. Although the family had vacationed in Wisconsin when the children were younger, Margaret and Bob began their real lives as travelers after they became empty nesters. They spent 21 years as snowbirds traveling to Green Valley, AZ. They also enjoyed vacations in Hawaii, Jamaica, Acapulco, and Mackinac Island, MI, and took cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and the St. Lawrence River. For the last 25 years, Margaret was able to enjoy her grandchildren, Tyler and Stephanie Sowa (Donna), and Kate and Jane Ni Struckman-Johnson (David). Everyone who knew Margaret thought of her as a kind, lovely, and gracious woman. Margaret is survived by her son, David and his wife, Cindy of Vermillion, SD and her daughter, Donna and her husband, Jim of Crystal Lake, IL; and her four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Bob. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. at the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St. (Route 31), Elgin, with Rev.
