Obituary Condolences

Martin Albert Powers Martin Albert Powers, 50,died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home June 23, 2013. Martin was a beloved coach and English and drama teacher at Kimball Middle School where he dedicated himself to challenging and uplifting hundreds of students for 24 years. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northwestern University and was an avid Wildcats fan. He was a super fan of Elgin High School basketball and followed the Maroons throughout his lifetime. Born and raised in Elgin, he loved the city in which he lived and worked and was a frequent patron of community theatre, the Gail Borden Library, Paul's and Al's. Integrity, kindness and generosity were hallmarks of his life. He was a prolific writer, performer, and articulate speaker and formed the Powers Entertainment group to produce and promote film. He gave memorable performances in lead roles in local theatre including "Dial M for Murder" and "It's a Wonderful life". He loved golf, classic Rock n Roll and The Beatles. He is survived by brothers Jerry, David, Craig (Nancy) and sister Carole Akemann; nieces and nephews Chris, Jordan, Taylor, Maggie, Lauren, Max, Jason (Jennifer) Akemann and Jessica (Peter) Isaac. He was the great uncle of John and Andrew Isaac and Grace Akemann and is also survived by his aunt and uncle, John and Marilyn Simpson, and cousins Jeff (Bertie), Janet (Mick) Doug (Stacey), Diane and Laura. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Richard and Mrs. Dorothy Powers and his brother, Michael. A celebration of his life will held Monday July 1 from 3-7 pm at the Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 51 Center St., downtown Elgin. A service will begin at 4 pm. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Martin Powers Athletic Scholarship through the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame, PO Box 1133, Elgin IL 60121.
