Obituary Condolences

Mary Gochanour Ramsay Mary Gochanour Ramsay, 87, died peacefully at her home in Wheaton, Ill. on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. at Elias Funeral Home in Streator, Ill. Services will be conducted at 12 noon, followed by burial at Riverview Cemetery in Streator. Rev. Jane Esterline of Park Presbyterian church will officiate at the services. Mary was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband, Joseph P. Ramsay, who died April 6, 2006. They had no children. Mary was born May 30, 1925, in Streator, Ill. She was the only child of Myrle and Rose Boyd Gochanour. Mary attended Streator schools and went to the University of Illinois, graduating from the School of Journalism in June of 1947. She met Joe on campus in September of 1943 and they returned there to be married at McKinley, the Presbyterian Church, on April 18, 1948. They continued a long affiliation with the U of I, as Joe served in the university's purchasing department at Chicago until his retirement as director of purchases. The Ramsays moved to Wheaton in the 1950s. They traveled extensively until illness prevented it. Mary enjoyed gardening and maintained an avid intellectual curiosity across many genres. She retained a solid attachment to Streator throughout her life. Mary was an enthusiastic and capable homemaker and was a member of DuPage County Homemakers Extension Association for over 55 years. She was also a longtime member and supporter of the American Legion Auxiliary, Streatorland Historical Society, Illinois State Historical Society, Illinois Railway Museum (Union, IL), Kappa Delta Sorority, Park Presbyterian Church, and First Presbyterian Church (Wheaton).
