Philip Krein Whitehouse of Hampshire Philip Krein Whitehouse, 88, formerly a longtime resident of Carpentersville, East Dundee and Huntley, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at home after a 14-year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on June 24, 1924, in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Dr. Horace and Emma (nee Rempfer) Whitehouse. He was raised in Evanston, where his father was a professor of music at Northwestern University. He was a graduate of the Northwestern University College of Engineering. Philip was a proud member of the "Greatest Generation" serving as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps during both World War II and the Korean Conflict, where he flew numerous reconnaissance missions over North Korea. Philip and his late wife, Barbara Anne Whitehouse (nee Lightner) were married on Oct. 28, 1950, in Reading, PA. After his discharge from the Marine Corps in 1953, they moved their young family to Carpentersville, where he was employed as a civil engineer for Leonard Besinger. In 1957 and 1958, he supervised the construction crews that built Meadowdale International Raceway. He spent the remainder of his professional career as a self-employed civil engineer, land surveyor, contractor and business owner in Hanover Park, South Elgin, Dundee, Huntley and Hampshire. Philip found time to serve his community as a member and longtime president of the Community Unit School District #300 Board of Education from 1965 to 1978. Survivors include his children, Robert of Woodstock, Barbara (Hon. James) Hallock of Elgin, Paul of Brookeville, MD, John of Sugar Grove, Janet (Thomas) Meyer of Wessington Springs, SD, Margaret of Hampshire, Christian (Mananya) of Hong Kong and Bangkok, Anne (Arthur) Hartman of Plainwell, MI, Martha of Pingree Grove and Thomas (Kimberly) of Fredericksburg, VA; his brothers, Rev. Rempfer Lees (Mary Rose) Whitehouse of San Diego, CA and Dr. David Rempfer (Ruth) Whitehouse of Weston, MA; his sisters, Adelaide (Dr. Kyle) Chapman of Lake Bay, WA and Agatha Seele of Ann Arbor, MI; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 2, 2011; his parents; brothers, Robert Rempfer Whitehouse and Horace Davis Whitehouse; sisters, Barbara Eshbach and Martha Snyder; and his youngest child, David Lightner Whitehouse on Oct. 26, 1979. There will be no visitation and a private family burial will be conducted in Parkston, SD.
