1935 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Steve T. Liapes of Gurnee Steve T. Liapes, Age 78, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital with his family and friends by his side. Steve was born on March 3, 1935 in Chicago, graduated from Hirsch High School in 1953, and later married the late Andrea Maheras. At age 13, Steve started working at his family grocery store and finished his career 65 years later with his friends and colleagues at Trader Joe's. Steve celebrated life and found joy in the simple pleasures. Known for his love of singing, he always seized an opportunity to serenade family and friends, especially on birthdays. His exuberant outlook and compassionate spirit will always be with us. Steve also served in the National Guard and belonged to the Moose Club. He is survived by his very close friend and companion, Marilyn Fredrickson; son, Peter Liapes; two grandchildren, Ciara and Patrick Liapes; two brothers, James (Angie) and Nicholas (Katherine) Liapes; and a loving uncle to all his nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Helen (Lambros) Liapes. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 24, from 5-7:00pm at the Salata Gurnee Funeral Home, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee with Trisagion Services, officiated by Father Cosmas Halekakis, at 7:00pm to conclude the visitation. Funeral Services will be held the next day, Thursday, July 25, at 11:00am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 N. O'Plaine Rd., Libertyville. Interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the , Lake County Regional Office, 100 Tri-State Int'l, #125, Lincolnshire, IL 60069 in Steve's memory.
