Col. T. Patrick Shumon Col. T. Patrick Shumon, 88, of Arlington Heights, formerly a longtime resident of Des Plaines, passed away Jan. 26, 2013. He was born on June 18, 1924, in Steubenville, Ohio. He was the beloved husband for 55 years of the late Lillian Ruth Shumon, who passed away on Nov. 27, 2010; loving father of Sherri (Doug) Juveland and Sandra (Tom) Hanna; and cherished grandfather of Kyle, Kristyn, Katelyn and Erik. He was predeceased by his parents, Theodore Henry (Helen Margaret) Shumon; as well as his sister, Dorothy Relief. Mr. Shumon attended Lane Technical High School from 1939 to 1943 where he was a Cadet Corporal. He was taken out of school for military service in February of 1943, but was later awarded his degree based upon the credits earned in his basic and specialty training. While at Lane Tech he was also Captain of the Diving Team. He later attended Ohio State University and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Shumon's military career included service in the USAAC (1941-1946) and the USAF (1946-1971). He was a retired Colonel of the USAF, A fighter pilot in World War II/Korea. His favorite plane to fly was the P-51 Mustang. He flew with the "78 Fighter Group" stationed at Duxford Air Base in England from 1945-1946, he also flew a P-40 Curtiss Warhawk (Flying Tiger Frame) in combat in the "African Campaign" against Rommel in World War II. Mr. Shumon was honored with 16 distinguished metals for World War II/Korea and was a founding member of the American Air Museum in Britain. Mr. Shumon was very involved in his community and served as President of the PTL for Immanuel Lutheran School in 1969 and has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Des Plaines for over 50 years where he served Chairman of the Board of Elders and was awarded the title of Board of Elders Emeritus for his length of service. He was a member of the Des Plaines Rotary Club where he served as secretary, VP and President in 1992. He was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow award through Rotary, he was a member of Des Plaines Crime Stoppers (also served as President for a term), he was a member of the Des Plaines Elks Lodge #1546 for 54 years and the American Legion Post 36 where he served on the Executive board and was a member of VFW Post 2992. Mr. Shumon worked for the Robert Irsay Co. where he designed and installed heating and duct ventilation. He then went on to obtain his Real Estate/Broker License where he began at Kunkel in Des Plaines, then went on to Century 21 Mc Kay Nealis, Stark and Prudential through the years. He served as a sales associate and Relocation Director for over 45 years. He also taught Real Estate School and won several sale awards for the One Million and Two Million Club. Visitation for Col. T. Patrick Shumon will be on Friday, Feb. 1, beginning at 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at G.L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines. He will lie in state on Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 855 Lee Street, Des Plaines. Interment will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaines. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For information, please call 847-699-9003.
