Warren Edwards Sweeney, 88, beloved husband of Beverly Dickerson Sweeney, passed away on May 7, 2014, after a struggle with Alzheimer's. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, and three children: Elizabeth Backes (David) of River Forest, IL, Kay Carter (Tod) of Lithia, FL, and Anne VanOsdol (James) of Skokie, IL; five grandchildren: Katie and Lauren Backes, Lilly Carter, and Noah and Fiona VanOsdol; his sister, Marilyn Sweeney Mavrinac of Glendale, WI; and six nieces and nephews. Warren was born in 1925 and spent the first part of his life in Cleveland. He graduated from Yale University in 1950 with a major in English Literature. Warren served with distinction in the infantry in the European Theater during World War II. He returned to Cleveland after college to begin his career in the apparel industry at Halle Brothers department store, where he met his wife of 55 years. A promotion in 1976 with White Stag resulted in a move to Barrington Hills, IL. Warren had numerous interests, including reading, French cooking, and traveling. His passion for gardening led to his Master Gardener status and in growing and selling herbs to local restaurants during his retirement. Warren's warmth, quick wit and infectious laughter will be missed. In his own words, "I've had a beautiful life." A memorial service is planned for 4pm on July 12th at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Ridge Road in Barrington Hills, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, IL, or St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Barrington Hills, IL.
