William R. "Bill" Eichhorst of Elgin William R. "Bill" Eichhorst, 91, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Presence St. Joseph Hospital. He was born March 11,1921, in Steven Point, WI, the son of William H. and Julie Nugent Eichhorst. Bill moved to Elgin in his early years and was a graduate of Elgin High School and Ellis Business College. Bill was employed by Elgin Paper Co. for 50 years; retiring as vice president, director of sales. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England, North Africa and Italy. He received the Bronze Star of meritorious achievement as master sergeant with the 15th Air Force Headquarters in Italy. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church Elgin, where he served as an usher for many years. Bill was a life member and past exalted ruler of Elgin Elks Lodge 737, honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, a 58-year member of American Legion Post 57 in Elgin, and past president and member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Elgin. Surviving are his wife, Alice Dauel Eichhorst, whom he married in April 1986; his granddaughter, Dana R. Eichhorst; daughter-in-law, Joan Eichhorst (Paul Bender); stepdaughter, Valerie (John) Seisser; stepgranddaughters, Michelle (Randy) Bannach and Stacy Piatek; stepgrandson, Andrew Seisser; and great-stepgrandson, Tyler Bannach. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife. Charlotte Helper Eichhorst in 1961; second wife, Shirley Stolt Eichhorst in 1976; his son, Stephen W. Eichhorst in 1992; his sister, Anne Eichhorst in 2000; and stepdaughter, Sally Piatek in 1998. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Burial with honors will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St. (Route 31), Elgin and then on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass in the church.
