NEWPORT NEWS - Alfred Louis "Danny" Machesney, 66, passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. He was a native of Steubenville, OH and a resident of Newport News for 46 years. He was a graduate of Wintersville High School. A Vietnam Veteran, he served in the United States Army from 1965-1968, and then joined the Army reserves from 1968-1985. He retired from the Newport News Police Department as a Master Police Officer in 2010 with 37 years of devoted service. He was admired and respected by all of his fellow officers and was often called "Dad" by the new recruits. Danny was an active member of the local F.O.P. where he served as Secretary/Treasurer for many years. He was also an instructor with the local American Red Cross specializing in CPR for people and pets. He was recently elected to the board of his Home Owners Association. He was past president of Harley Owners Group in Hampton Roads. Danny is preceded in death by his parents, John and Goldie Machesney; brothers Richard, Walter and John. Also, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law Chuck Oliver of Weirton, WV. Danny is survived by sister Cindy Oliver of Weirton and nieces Carrie Shultz (Eddie) of Joffre, PA and Casey Oliver of Weirton. Also surviving is Danny's great-nephew, Caleb (Louie) Shultz.Danny will always be remembered as carefree and adventurous. He loved his family, friends, OBX, Steelers football, and Pirates baseball. He was greatly loved by many and will leave a huge void in the hearts of the people he leaves behind, but all can take solace that he is in a better place and with his beloved parents. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 17 from 12 to 3:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, August 18 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Steubenville,OH.
