NEWPORT NEWS - Allison Cutler, longtime Peninsula resident and widow of Robert C. Cutler, former Vice Mayor and Postmaster of Newport News, died peacefully in her sleep on May10, 2014. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Wihtred and Carruth Cook, she attended University High School and Mills College in Oakland, California. She met Robert Cutler, then a Captain in the U.S. Army, who was attending Civilian Administration School at the University of Michigan. Only ten days into their relationship Cutler received orders to go overseas and they were immediately wed prior to his deployment. They remained married for 55 years until his demise in 2000. Mrs. Cutler was a founding member of the Warwick Garden Club, and active for many years in the Womens' Circle of the First Presbyterian Church, and volunteer work at Riverside Hospital. She is survived by her sister Margaret Strickland of Birmingham, Michigan and her sister Catherine Frost of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her three children, Susan T. Cutler of Newport News, John W. Cutler and his wife Molly of Dallas, Texas and, Robert D. Cutler and his wife Kathleen of Warwick, Rhode Island. She is also survived by her five grandchildren Winn, Holt Callie, Eleanor and Ann. Visitation will be between 2 and 6pm on Thursday and Friday at the home of her daughter, with whom she lived. A memorial service will be held at the Hidenwood Presbyterian Church at 11am on Saturday, May 17th.
