Charles Granville Puffenberger Obituary
WILLIAMSBURG - Charles Granville Puffenberger of Williamsburg, Virginia, died March 9, 2014. He was born in Luray, Virginia, December 30, 1921, son of Albert and Lelia Puffenberger. He was married to Janice Louise Kistler, June 13, 1948. The couple have four children; Kirk Puffenberger, Sharmon Puffenberger, Kent Puffenberger, and Jana Puffenberger. CG of Puff, as he was known by his friends and family, is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jan Puffenberger, his children; Kirk, and wife, Candice, with daughter, Leah and son, Kyle; Sharmon and husband, Wayne, with sons, Ben and Travis; Kent and wife, Kate, with daughters, Katlin and Kelsey; and Jana Puffenberger. Great grandchildren include Austin, Levi and Addy, children of Travis and Rachel Stratton. Mr. Puffenberger retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as an Engineering Manager in 1987. He served in the navy in World War II and again in the Korean War. He was a registered engineer in Virginia and active in the Society of Professional Engineers serving on the State Board and as Chapter President. He was also a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the American Society of Naval Engineers. He graduated from Luray High School, the Newport News Apprentice School, and the University of Michigan where he earned two bachelor degrees, one in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and one in Mathematics. He did graduate work at the University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, and Old Dominion University. He also received a years training in nuclear engineering at the Westinghouse Atomic Power Division. He was an active member of the North Riverside Baptist Church in the early 1960's and the Williamsburg Baptist Church since 1964. He enjoyed serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of Building and Grounds, and many other positions. He was also active in AARP having served as State Director and as Chapter President. He was a past member of Queens Lake Board. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 14, at the Williamsburg Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Virginia. Interment at the church memorial garden with a reception following in the south wing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Williamsburg Baptist Church Endowment Fund or other .
