Clarence Leon Hicks Jr. Obituary
ROCKFORD, IL - Clarence Leon Hicks, Jr., 77, of Rockford, IL, unexpectedly, yet peacefully, passed away on February 24, 2014. Clarence, affectionately known as "C" to friends and "Hicksie" to his family, was born September 5, 1936 in Hanover, VA to Clarence L. Hicks, Sr. and Tessie Romain (Anderson) Hicks. Clarence would want all to know he was content in having lived a full life as he always said, "I've enjoyed myself". He was a "great guy" with a good sense of humor and caring nature who was dearly loved by all who knew him. For 42 years, Clarence worked for the Rockford Park District, where he rose to become its Superintendent of Recreation, Deputy Director, and Senior Manager, and received awards and recognition on both a local and national level, until his retirement in December 2003. He obtained a B.S. Degree in Parks & Recreation Administration from Virginia State University, in Petersburg, VA in 1957. Later, he attended graduate courses at the University of Illinois in Chicago to obtain degrees in Administration in Parks & Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation in 1975. At VSU, Clarence played 4 years of varsity football and was nicknamed "Crazy Man" by his teammates for his tackling feats and competitive nature. Prior to college, he graduated from Armstrong High School in Richmond, VA. An accomplishment he was proud of having traveled 16 miles each way to attend school. In April 1957, Clarence married his college sweetheart, Jacqueline Y. Brown, of Ruthville, VA. Their 30-year union was blessed with three children: Laura N. Hicks-Ellis, Robin Y. Hicks, and Howard L. Hicks. A jazz enthusiast, Clarence enjoyed cooking, attending pro football and basketball games, eating great seafood, especially fresh fish and crabs from his family's hometown area near Chesapeake Bay, and most of all relaxing at home with family and friends, especially "Jack". A strong motivator to his close friends and family, Clarence was known for giving his favorite words of advice - "Ain't nothing to do, but to do it!" Clarence is lovingly remembered and survived by a daughter, Laura N. Hicks-Ellis of Chicago; a son, Howard L. Hicks of Roscoe; granddaughters, Marie J. Ellis of Chicago, and Krista R. Hicks, Dawn Y. Hicks, and Star J. Hicks all of Ruthville, VA; aunt, Wyonella Smith of Chicago; sister, Madolyn Lauritta Goble of Hampton, VA; nephews, Michael Goble of Salt Lake City, UT and Bruce Goble of Hampton, VA; close friend, Samuel Gaynor of Rockford; dear friend, Eileen Shepherd of Chicago; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews; and many, many close friends. Clarence is predeceased by his daughter, Robin Y. Hicks; his former wife, Jacqueline Y. Brown Hicks-Greene; his parents, Clarence L. Hicks, Sr. and Tessie Hicks; a sister, Hazel Hicks; brother-in-law, David Goble, Sr.; and nephew, David Goble, Jr. A Funeral Service to celebrate Clarence's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 412 N. Church St., in Rockford. Interment immediately following at Greenwood Cemetery. Following the Interment, the Family will receive relatives and friends at the Church. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at Fred C. Olson Funeral Home, 2811 N. Main St. To share a memory or condolence, visit www.olsonfh.com.
