WILLIAMSBURG - Donald Beasley Pledger, 77, passed away June 22, 2013 at The Gardens at Warwick Forest in Newport News, VA. He was born in Washington, D.C. August 7, 1935 to the late Reginald Harrison Pledger and Margaret Davis Beasley Pledger, and grew up in Chevy Chase, MD. Don studied Horticulture at Iowa State College and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1959, Don entered the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. Upon completing OCS, he served as an Ensign aboard the USS Jack W. Wilke, and later as a Lieutenant aboard the USS Albert T. Harris. Don earned a post graduate degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia in 1966. After graduate school, Don worked at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Society of Planning Officials. Don loved the outdoors, the seeds of this love sown early in life at Camp Red Cloud on the shores of Lake Champlain where he spent several summers with his brother, Harrison and his sister, Phyllis. Later in life those seeds would blossom into his passion for skiing, sailing, hiking and travel. Over several years, Don and friend Don Bowman hiked large sections of the Appalachian Trail beginning in their high school days. In 1982, Don and friends founded the Downhill Ski and Touring Club, a group that embarked on yearly skiing adventures in the U.S. and in Europe as well as sailing trips around the Chesapeake Bay aboard Don's 30 foot C&C Yankee sloop, Moonraker. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Greer Pledger of Williamsburg; sister, Phyllis Wheaton; brother, Reginald Harrison Pledger, Jr.; nieces, Wendy Swanton, Kim Parks, Kathy Askin and Laurie Wilson; nephews, Ken Pledger and Kevin Pledger; and first wife, Virginia Pledger. A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. at the Port Anne Reception Center, 211 William Way, Williamsburg, VA 23185 on Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
