NEWPORT NEWS - Don Quackenbush, 77, died peacefully in his home on January 23, 2013 after a well-fought battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born April 15, 1935 in Kingston, NY. Don was an Officer in the U.S. Air Force and was a Distinguished Graduate ('55). He served twenty years, and retired at Langley. He was an F-4 Fighter Pilot, served three tours in Vietnam and awarded a Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, the Cross of Gallantry and sixteen Air Medals. After obtaining his MPA, Don started his own management consulting business. Later, he became a Mortgage Broker and Manager. He hosted Ask the Expert Radio Program and was a Member of the American Mensa Society. In 2012, Don was awarded Business Instructor of the Year from Centura College. An athlete and outdoorsman his entire life, Don was also an accomplished golfer, twice shooting a hole-in-one. A memorial tree will be planted in his honor. He will be remembered for his warmth, sense of humor, caring, love of life, and his lifelong achievements. He is survived by his wife, Marilynn (March) Quackenbush, son, Robert, daughters, Beth Cahill and Jennifer Badish and her husband, Ken, step-sons Tasso and Shawn Pugh and Allen and Jeff Walden and grandchildren Morgan, Boo, Colton, Kieran, Amelia, and Jacob; his sister Nancy and her husband, John D. Dooley, niece Suzeanne Quaintance and nephew, Brian Dooley and preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Rosemary Quackenbush of Saugerties, NY. A Memorial service will be held at the Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News on Wednesday, Jan. 30th at 7 PM (visitation 6 PM). Purple/pink/red ties or scarves encouraged.
