WAVERLY - Mrs. Dorothy Anderson Savedge, 91 of Waverly, Virginia died January 15, 2014. She was the widow of John A. (Jack) Savedge of Surry, Virginia. Mrs. Savedge was born May 22, 1922 in Twin City, Georgia, the daughter of Ernest and Susie Pryor Anderson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Anderson of Slidell, Louisana. She is survived by her children, Suzanne Savedge Flynn and husband Edward of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and J. Charles Savedge and wife Mary Alma of Surry, Virginia; her grandchildren, John A. Savedge, II, Joel F. Savedge, Sarah R. Savedge of Surry, E. Burke Flynn of Pittsburgh and William S. Flynn of Los Angeles, kept her young in spirit and brought joy to her life. Dorothy, a graduate of the University of Georgia and Virginia Tech, came as a young home economics teacher to Virginia where she met and married Jack Savedge of Surry. Although she lived most of her life in Virginia, Dorothy remained close to her family in Georgia. She recently enjoyed visiting her many cousins at the 110th Pryor Family Reunion in Sumter County, Georgia. Mrs. Savedge taught home economics in Surry County and Norfolk, Virginia Public Schools. She was a devoted educator who, after her husband's death, pursued a rewarding career in higher education at Longwood and Norfolk State Universities. Dorothy was blessed with active and fulfilling retirement years in Waverly. Her life was enriched by the many friendships she made through Surry Garden Club, APVA/Preservation Virginia, "Red Hats" and other organizations. She enjoyed volunteering at the Miles B. Carpenter Museum, Smith's Fort, and Chippokes State Park. Mrs. Savedge was a member of Christ Church (Episcopal) Waverly, where she served on the Vestry and was a member of the Altar Guild and Episcopal Church Women. The kindness and concern of her church, community as well as her friends and neighbors brought great happiness to Mrs. Savedge in her later years. A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Christ Church (Episcopal) Waverly, Virginia. Interment will take place at a later date at Oak Grove Cemetery, Surry County, Virginia.
