NEWPORT NEWS - Dorothy Sundene Sandahl, 91, of Newport News, died Sunday, May 5, 2013. She was born in Chicago on November 16, 1921. Dorothy married Carl on March 6, 1943 and moved to Virginia where he worked for NASA. She was an original member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, where she volunteered for many years. She took great pride in her employment with several local banks. Dorothy and Carl traveled extensively overseas and particularly enjoyed their adventures traveling by trailer throughout the United States. She also enjoyed sailing, riding her bike, tutoring students at Hidenwood Elementary and spending time with her extended family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Carl; her brother, Jack Sundene; and daughter-in-law, Ella Sandahl. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Sandahl-Murray, and her husband, Larry; her son, James Sandahl; two grandchildren, Tammy Hayes, and her husband, Michael, and Craig Sandahl, and his wife, Bonnie; and her great-grandchildren, Corey and Payton Hayes and Jacob, Jack, and Ashley Sandahl. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 11:00am at Weymouth Funeral Home by Rev. Bill Lamont. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
