NEWPORT NEWS - Elbert L. Hawks, Jr., 84, affectionately known to his friends and family as "Jr.", passed away at home Saturday, July 20, 2013. A native of West Virginia, he was a resident of Newport News for 60 years. Jr. retired as a Captain from the Newport News Fire Department after 25 years of service. He was a former member of Morrison United Methodist Church, the Newport News Retired Firefighters Association, and cooked and served meals for the homeless, church members, and his fellow firefighters. He was preceded in death by his brother Freddie L. Hawks who was also a Captain of the Newport News Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Betty Hawks; daughter Pam Hackney and husband, Fred; son Lester Hawks III; grandchildren, Forrest Warren, Jason Warren, and Chrissy Hawthorne; six great-grandchildren; and his one niece and nephew Tina Buchanan and Jimmy Mahady. The family will receive friends Monday, July 29 from 6 to 7:30 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A private graveside will be held in Peninsula Memorial Park.
