NEWPORT NEWS - Elizabeth "BJ" Hamilton Holmes passed away on March 22, 2013 at The Chesapeake Healthcare Center. She was born October 28, 1936 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania to the late Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton. BJ was a graduate of Upper Darby High School and attended Villanova University. She retired from Glaxo-Smith Kline and moved to Newport News in 1994. BJ was injured in an automobile accident in 1969 and as a result was paralyzed from the waist down. She overcame incredible physical and emotional obstacles in order to maintain not only her position at Smith Kline but the respect and love of everyone with whom she worked. Her fellow employees were inspired daily by her perseverance and positive attitude toward life. She served as chairperson of the Architectural Barrier Committee of the Delaware Valley Council on Services to the Handicapped; published the 1973 updated "Guide to Philadelphia for the Handicapped," served on the Governor's Subcommitee on Barrier Free Design; was a Region 1 board member and secretary of the Pennsylvania Rehabilitation Association. She received its Distinguished Service Award in 1978. She was a charter member of Disabled in Action. After relocating to Newport News she volunteered at the Mariner's Museum and was a member of the board of the Bronze Door Society. She attended and volunteered at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church. BJ was predeceased by her husband, Billy F. Holmes. She is survived by brothers, John E. Hamilton and wife Nancy of Virginia Beach, Robert A. Hamilton and wife Genny of Media, Pennsylvania, and Richard T. Hamilton and fiancé Tina Dedicke of Newport, NY; step-daughter, Nancy Cunningham of Atlanta, Georgia; step-grandson, Jon France of Front Royal, Virginia; nephew, John P. Hamilton of Virginia Beach; and nieces, Elizabeth "Beth" Evans of Yorktown, Lynne Agnese of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Pamela Keane of Suffolk, Paula Owen of Virginia Beach, Laura Pettit of Media, Pennslyvania, and Kim Ford of Carney's Point, New Jersey. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at The Chesapeake, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News, Virginia. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service. Donations in her memory may be made to the Mariners Museum or to a breast cancer
