NEWPORT NEWS - Evelyn Burgess Huffman, 94, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013. She was a native of Greensboro, North Carolina and came to the Peninsula in 1943. Evelyn retired from NASA in 1977. She worked for Dynamic Engineering, John McMullen and for a short time, Newport News Shipbuilding as a Designer. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Huffman, and her brother, Rufus Lee Burgess of Pensacola, Florida. Evelyn was a member of Langley Baptist Church since 1978. She joined the Republican Party City Committee of Hampton in 1980. She was a charter member of James River Cat Fanciers, Chamberlin on the Bay Cat Club and the Color Point Fanciers, Short Hair Fanciers Cat Club of America. She was a member/secretary of the Virginia Cat Fanciers. Many may remember her for her Siamese cats. For a while she was noted for her red color point Siamese in cat shows. She won many awards and owned the DA-Glo Cattery. Friends will gather from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Monday, January 6, 2014 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, with a celebration of Evelyn's life to begin at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Langley Baptist Church Memorial Fund. Friends are encouraged to visit to share memories and words of condolence. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave. in Hampton, 23666.
