SMITHFIELD, VA - Gwaltney Watson "Buddy" White, Jr. passed away July 10, 2013. He was born August 20, 1927, to the late Elma and Gwaltney White. He was preceded in death by his son, Gwaltney "Bud" White III and his sister, Ann Hallmark. He was a life-long resident of Isle of Wight County and member of Smithfield Baptist Church. Buddy graduated from Smithfield High School in 1944 and served in the US Army at the end of World War II. After a brief stint at Virginia Tech, he returned home to pursue his love of farming. Of the various commodities the farm produced, the most prevalent was peanuts, for which he won numerous awards. He was also an avid golfer and long-time member of Cedar Point Country Club. Buddy served Southeastern Virginia in a variety of leadership roles. He was appointed to the Isle of Wight County School Board in 1963 where he served until 1970 as chairman. He was re-appointed in 1978 for another four-year term. Buddy served on the county Re-assessment Board, as Chairman of the Agricultural and Forestry Advisory Committee, and as tiebreaker for the Board of Supervisors. In 1967, along with nine other farmers and businessmen, he founded Prescription Fertilizer and Chemical Co., and served on its Board of Directors since that time. Buddy was appointed to the board of Community Electric Cooperative in 1982 and served as its president from 1989-2000. He also served as a board member of Old Dominion Electric Cooperative from 1982 until his retirement as chairman in 2000. In 2001, he was honored as the recipient of the 2001 Electrical Cooperative Leadership award. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Sally Beckett and husband Rob of Virginia Beach, grandson Gwaltney Wright and wife Samantha, granddaughter Lauren Caughorn and husband Nick, and great-grandson Landon Wright. He is also survived by his brother, Charles W. White and wife Rosemarie and their sons Chuck and Mark. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to a
. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Smithfield Baptist Church. A reception will follow the service in the Family Life Center. Burial will be private. Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, VA.
