NEWPORT NEWS - Hitohisa Asai, 81, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 13, 2013 in Newport News. He was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1931 and married in Tokyo in 1963. After completing his undergraduate and first graduate degrees in Japan, he worked at the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan. He came to America in 1964 to complete his second masters at the University of Wisconsin, worked with NASA, completed his doctorate at the University of Houston in 1975, and was a Computer Science professor at Christopher Newport College. He is survived by his wife, Tatsuko; three sons, Jun, Yujin and Hiroki; and four grandchildren, Eizaku, Anriku, Hayley, and Sadie. He was a member of Soka Gakkai International (SGI-USA), a lay Buddhist organization. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel at 2 pm Sunday, January 20, 2013; the funeral service will begin at 2:30 pm followed by visitation. Service and visitation will end by 4 pm. The family expresses thanks to the doctors, especially Dr. Todd Duggan, and nurses at Riverside Regional Medical Center for their expert and compassionate care of Hitohisa in the hospital's Critical Care Unit.
