NEWPORT NEWS - On February 23, 2014, John Bradford Comer, Sr. left this world to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. John was born on March 29, 1925 in McMinnville, Tennessee and was a longtime resident of Newport News. He was the youngest of seven children and was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings. John served his country proudly in World War II in the European Theater where he was wounded in combat and awarded the Purple Heart. John graduated from the NACA Apprentice school as a Model Maker and retired from NASA in 1977 after 34 years of service. John was a wonderful wood craftsman and had the uncanny ability to fix or repair just about anything. John was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Annette Rawles. John was a gentle man that modeled his marriage vows throughout their marriage, but most visibly during the nine years he cared daily for Annette after she became disabled. John and Annette had three children: David Wheeler Comer (deceased), Susan Comer Adcock (Richmond) and John Bradford "Brad" Comer, Jr. (Newport News). He is also survived by four Grandchildren: Jennifer Comer Bowen and John Parker Comer in Newport News and Lee Anderson Adcock and Sara Christine Adcock in Richmond. John has four great-grand children. John loved his family and his church. He was a past member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Newport News, and is a current member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and generously donated his time, talents and gifts to God's work. John was a wonderful Christian husband and father. The family would like to thank the staff at the Mennowood Retirement Community for their loving care for John during the last 3 years of John's life. The family will receive friends at the Peninsula Funeral Home from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26. The funeral will be held at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Gina Anderson-Cloud. Burial to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
