HAMPTON - John Carlos Johnson,85,was called home by his Lord and Savior on Feb 2,2013. He was born on July 23,1927 in Turkey,N.C. After serving in the Army Air Corps, John relocated to Newport News where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Lenora. He worked in the shipyard prior to being hired by the railroad as a fireman. He quickly qualified to the position of locomotive engineer and retired after 35 years with the railroad. John was a faithful volunteer for the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins activity program and Scout troop 140 for over 50 years He also served the Lord for more than 25 years as chairman of the grounds crew at Liberty Baptist Church where he was a member. He thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship with the wonderful Christian men he worked with. John was always an avid vegetable gardener. He is survived by his wife Lenora; daughters Linda (Charles) Johnson of Newport News and Denise (Les) Walker of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by three sisters, one brother, four grand-children, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and his precious daughter Regina. John will be greatly remembered as the Lord's servant in so many ways and as a loving husband and father. He fought a courageous battle with the cancer that ravaged his body but never his sweet, gentle spirit. We love you always daddy and we will all be together in Heaven. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Peninsula Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Liberty Baptist Church , with burial following in Peninsula Memorial Park. Pastor Joe Hunt will be officiating.
