John H. CLINE Obituary
HAMPTON - LCDR. John Hendrix Cline, lost his long battle with cancer in the early morning of Dec. 1, 2012, with his family by his side. He was born in Britton, Okla., in 1944 to Fae (Dagenhart) and David Cline.
John joined the U.S. Navy in 1962 and was selected to enter the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the academy in 1967, and while awaiting flight school, his first assignment was to teach sailing at the academy. After flight school, John was assigned to the carrier, USS John F. Kennedy with the Strike Fighter Squadron Tophatters.
John went to the Naval Post Graduate School at the Naval Air Station (Miramar) in San Diego, Calif., where he earned an aeronautical engineering degree. After serving in the Navy he began working for the Department of Defense working on Rotocraft research at NASA Langley. He retired from NASA in 2000.
John loved to travel, sail and entertain. One of his greatest accomplishments was his ability to love people, he had many friends and an incredible zest for life.
John is survived by his wife, Pamela; her three children who became his "self inflicted wounds" children, Sean Gebhart (Tonia), Olaf Gebhart (Deena) and Robin Wilkerson (John); his grandchildren, Kory and Logan Gebhart, Lindsey and Heather Mich no, Hannah, Bailey and Henry Gebhart, Shelby Wilkerson (Mark), John "Chaz" Wilkerson; great-grandchild with whom he had a special bond, Kenlee Hannon; his beloved pets and numerous friends.
The family wishes to give a very special thanks to Shannon Waldrop from Riverside Cancer Center for her loving care, John loved her dearly, and to Dr. O.T. Adcock who took John on his final sail on the "Whisper." It would not be possible to list all of the amazing friends who helped in so many ways. Your love and prayers have sustained him the past five years.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Warwick Baptist Church, 30 Curtis Tignor Rd., in Newport News. Inurnment will be at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium, with full military honors on Friday, April 12, 2013.
