HAMPTON - John Henry Jones passed away on Nov. 17, 2012, after a lengthy illness.|
He was born on Nov. 15, 1935, in Hickory, N.C., to the late Robert Edward Jones and Odessa Brown Jones. "Henny," as he was affectionately known by his mother, attended school in both North Carolina and New York City. As a young man, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Upon completion of that service, he began work for B. O. A. C., as a cargo worker, and later became senior passenger officer for British Airways, until his retirement.
John Henry was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Drucilla Jones; his wife, Sylvia Mayers Jones; a son, John Douglas Jones; and a grandson, Troy Atkins.
John Henry leaves behind to mourn, his beloved children, Joyce Newsome, Kenneth Shuford, Robert Jones, Thomas Jones; his niece, Veronica Jones Wilson, 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five great nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and close friends.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11a.m. Monday, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Immediately following at 11 a.m., a funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Peggy Buelow.
