HAMPTON - John Marshall McCloud Jr., 69, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2012.
A lifelong resident of Hampton, John served in the U.S. Navy, during the Vietnam War and retired as a master plumber with the Local 540 Plumbers Union. He was an avid Redskins and NASCAR fan.
John was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Maidie and Edward Swanson.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Peggy McCloud; sister-in-law, Nancy Walton; brother-in-law, Richard Mantiply; niece and her husband, Marie and Jackie Smith; great-niece and great-nephew, Lauren and Justin; special friends, John and Judy Barker, and Doris Rich; and other extended family and friends. He also leaves behind his beloved canine companion, Choco.
"The Long Goodbye" When the doctors did all they could, I brought you home. It was where you wanted to be….the long goodbye. I watched you get weak and frail but you always looked forward to a game of cribbage with your good friend and "Bro," John Barker….the long goodbye. They took you away again to the E.R. Each time when I got to the hospital, I never knew if you would be alive or not…the long goodbye. I would bring you home again, a little bit worse off than before. You made your wishes known...the long goodbye. You were home eight days before they took you away again. This time God knew you were so tired, so he called you home. The Last Goodbye..."Until we are together again."
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, in downtown Hampton. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, at Hampton Veterans Memorial Gardens.
The family wants to give special thanks and gratitude to the 3rd and 4th floor nursing staff at Sentara Careplex, for their loving care and compassion.
The family wishes expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to any of the following organizations: The Cat Corner; Peninsula SPCA; or the Animal Aide Society.
