NEWPORT NEWS - John S. Cox, Sr. 83, died Tuesday January, 14, 2014 peacefully at his home. He was born on January 9, 1931 at Newark, New Jersey to the late Francis J. Cox, Sr. and Catherine Mayer Cox. He grew up in Newark and enlisted in the Air Force in March 1949. He was stationed at Langley Air Force Base when he met and married Helen Conway, together they raised their family in Newport News, Virginia. John worked as a fireman for the Newport News Fire Department before working at the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company over the span of 10 years and progressed from "handyman" to Design Engineer. He was proud to be a part of that great company. He was an electronics development technician at the Transportation Research Command at Fort Eustis during the sixties and proudly served 20 years with Naval Ships Engineering Center (NavSecNorDiv) until his retirement in 1987. He was a Newport News City School Bus Driver for 9 years and he worked at Busch Gardens for 9 years he enjoyed both jobs, in fact, John just enjoyed working. He was the Treasurer and a Service Officer for Disabled American Veterans Chapter #2 from 2008 thru 2010. He was a member of American Legion Post 368, Loyal Order of Moose 1711 and the Moose Legion for many years. John was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather; he enjoyed the many vacations spent with family at Lake Gaston, Disney World and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He also enjoyed worldwide travel and visited Hawaii, Alaska, South America, Africa and many countries in Europe for both military and recreational purposes. His life revolved around his family, boating, dancing, bowling, gardening, cooking, hunting and fishing. John was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas M. Cox , Francis J. Cox Jr., William E. Cox. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Helen Conway Cox and children, John S. Cox Jr and wife Christine of Newport News, Cheryl A. Sloggie and husband Ronnie of Newport News and James E. Cox and wife Denna of Smithfield Va.; six grandchildren, Meaghan P. Cox, Ian C. Cox, Christopher J. Drury and Christian Little and her daughter Gracie; Charles W. Knuteson, Erica C. Cox, Julia C. Cox. He is also survived by his brother Charles R. Cox of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and sister in law Marie Cox of Forked River, New Jersey; and his faithful dog Bo. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Peninsula Funeral Home. The service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the burial immediately following in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk Va.
