NEWPORT NEWS - Lt. Col. Eugene Novikoff, USAF retired, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013 after a short illness. Gene was born to Russian immigrant parents on January 28, 1929. He spent his early years growing up in East Chicago, Indiana. At the young age of 18 he joined the USAF and spent 22 years serving his country. After his retirement from the Air Force in 1970 he spent 20 years in Civil Service at Langley AFB. During his military service he earned the Meritorious Service Award and Bronze Star. After serving his country, Gene earned his BA at the University of Nebraska and 2 Masters Degrees from The College of William and Mary and George Washington University. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edith Novikoff. He is survived by his wife, Martha Novikoff of Newport News; his children, Steve Novikoff of Sugarland, TX, Lynn Smith of Charles City, and Tom Novikoff of Lewes, DE; and his sister, Marge Cox of Indianapolis, IN. Along with his children, he is survived by three grandchildren, Nadia (Scott) Shivers, Jennifer (Chris) Wilson, and Nathan (Faith) Novikoff, all of Houston, TX; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Penny. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 from 4:30 to 7:00 PM at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, 101 Museum Drive, Newport News.
