Mildred Lucille Cheves Moorman Obituary
MARTINSVILLE, VA - Mildred Lucille Cheves Moorman, wife of the late Dr. John Hope Moorman, Jr. of Martinsville, VA died peacefully September 14, 2013. She was born November 3, 1919 in Macon, GA, to the late John Langdon and Minnie Ida Roberts Cheves, the seventh of eight children. She is survived by her five children, Kenneth Allen Moorman (Susan) of Williamsburg, VA; Linda Jean Moorman Price (Jay) of Columbia, SC; Ronald Eugene Moorman (Betty) of Martinsville, VA; Dianne Lilia Moorman Johnson of Westminster, MD; and Mary Katherine Moorman (Steve Morris) of Mint Hill, NC. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, special niece Betty Jo Croom Bowen (BF) of Foneswood, VA, and numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by three sisters and her three brothers. She is survived by one sister, Emily Watkins Cheves Garrett of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Mildred graduated from and met her husband while attending Macon Hospital School of Nursing. They married June 21, 1941 in Macon. They lived in Williamsburg in 1942 while Dr. Moorman prepared to deploy to the European Theater with the Army Medical Corp during WWII. Their son Kenneth was born while they lived in Williamsburg. She resided in Macon until Dr. Moorman returned from overseas duty in 1945 and moved to Martinsville in 1955 for him to establish his OB/GYN practice. She was a homemaker who lovingly cared for her family and long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, active with the Women of the Church. She served as president of the Martinsville Hospital Auxiliary, was an avid bridge player, and active in garden clubs. For the last twelve years she resided at King's Grant in Martinsville. A funeral service will be held at Victory Chapel at King's Grant, 250 Kings Way, Martinsville, VA on Wednesday, September 18, 2014 at 10:00 AM with a graveside service following at 3:30 PM at the Mt. Jackson Cemetery in Mt. Jackson, VA. She will be buried beside her husband in the Moorman Family plot. McKee-Stone Funeral Home of Martinsville is in charge of the arrangements.
