YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA - Neva Burcher Brooks, 94, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013. Neva was a native and lifelong resident of York County. Neva attended Mary Washington College and taught in York County Schools for 10 years. She retired from NASA Langley Research Center in 1979 after 30 years of service. She was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown, serving in many capacities, her favorite as a teacher of the Ladies Bible class for many years. She was also a member of the Comte de Grasse Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Lord de la Warr Chapter Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, and the York County Historical Society. Neva was preceded in death by her husband Thomas F. Brooks, Jr.; parents Levin and Mary Burcher; a sister Mildred Ribble; and two brothers Manning and Cosby Burcher. She is survived by her sister Carolyn Brooks; niece Bonnie Brooks Karwac and nephew David R. Brooks, both of whom were caregivers for Neva and several other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her beloved cat Greyson. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 30, at Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown with Rev. C. Douglas Akers officiating, with a reception following the service in the church social hall. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, October 29, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Interment will be private in Grafton Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to Providence United Methodist Church Building Fund, 113 Old Dare Road, Yorktown, VA 23692 or to the Grafton Christian Church Cemetery Fund, 109 Brick Church Road, Yorktown, VA 23692.
