WILLIAMSBURG - Richard A. Whaley, 77, passed away on Tuesday, May 14 in Williamsburg, VA. He was born April 2, 1936 in Wheaton, Minnesota. Richard is survived by his wife, Maureen Whaley; his two daughters, Rachelle Whaley of Los Angeles and Christine Beaty and her husband, Bob, of Canton, Illinois; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; four sisters, and one brother. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Richard retired after twenty-four years of service in the Aviation Division of the U.S. Army, completing four combat tours, to include Korea, the Dominican Republic, and two tours in Vietnam. He was a master parachutist with the 82nd Airborne Division, receiving many commendations, including the Army Commendation medal with three oak leaf clusters and numerous air medals. Upon retirement he continued in the aviation profession with Bell Helicopter in Iran, Saudia Arabia, and later as Technical Director of aviation maintenance schools in Virginia and Malaysia. He was a man who loved animals and nature, a dedicated fisherman and an occasional hunter. He certainly enjoyed his cottage in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, May 20 at 11 AM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. Interment with full military honors will follow the service at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 N. Armistead Ave, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in his name at the Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Rd, Hampton, VA 23666 or the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 960, 401 Boundry Rd, Lackey, VA 23694.
