NEWPORT NEWS - On Tuesday, January 7, 2014, LTC (Ret.) Robert Nelson Eddy was called home to be with his Lord and Savior. A native of Los Angeles, Calif., he had been a peninsula resident since 1976 following an incredible journey that led him from the steps of the UCLA and then University of California Berkley to a military career in the Army that spanned 27 years on three continents. He served in the South Pacific earning the Bronze Star among other awards. After retirement from the military at Fort Monroe, he moved the family to the Chicago area where he was an executive in the Chicago Public School system for the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. Robert known as Bob to his dear friends and Pop to his family married the love of his life, Edna Rodgers Eddy and began an incredible journey serving his country in the Army, raising three children and traveling the world. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl Holden Eddy and Lionel Valentine Eddy; his wife of 58 years, Edna Rodgers Eddy, and his daughter, Susan Eddy Whitman. He is survived by his sons, John R. Eddy (Lynn) of Burke, Va., William S. Eddy (Melissa) of Spotsylvania, Va., grandsons, Richard Handly (Kelly), Greg Eddy (Andra), Christopher Eddy (Mary Jane), Michael Eddy (Heather), Robert Eddy (Melissa), Geoff Eddy (Stephanie), Joseph Eddy and eleven precious great grandchildren, Cole and Morgan, Alyssa and Kendra, Cara and Jake, Ava, Mason and Piper, Conner, and Courtney who all adored him. The family would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to Dr. Huffman and staff at The Chesapeake in Newport News and Dr. McCullen, both the E.R., and the I.C.U staffs at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton. A special thank you to Willie and A.J. who assisted with his care over the years - he loved that time together. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 25, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 514 South Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA followed by a reception at the church. Inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family requests that any expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions in Robert's name to First Presbyterian Church, 514 South Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA. R. Hayden Smith is in charge of arrangements.
