SMITHFIELD - Robert Owens Routten passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at his home in Smithfield surrounded by his family.

Robert grew up in Fox Hill, graduated from Hampton High School and was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding for 47 years. Robert was also a former volunteer firefighter. Throughout his life, "Poss" enjoyed field trials, coon hunting, riding horses, dancing and coaching women's fastpitch softball teams. He was a loving father and dedicated family man who's one-of-a-kind laugh will never be forgotten.
Robert is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Spencer Routten; daughter, Blake Routten Rougeux and husband, Raymond Rougeux Jr.; daughter, Amber Routten-Mitchell and husband, Edward Mitchell Jr.; and brother, Lennie Francis Routten.
Robert is predeceased by his parents, Ollie Segar Routten II and Frances Owens Routten; and brother, Ollie Segar Routten III.
To honor Robert's request, a graveside ceremony only will be held at Clark Cemetery in Fox Hill at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 30.
