YORKTOWN - Ross Lee Goble, Ph.D., born in 1931 in Richmond, Indiana, long-time resident of Newport News/Yorktown, son of Samuel and Rose Ross Goble, loving husband, father, scholar, artist, civic leader left this life on June 8, 2013 in the loving arms of his family, to be with the Lord. Ross, an accomplished businessman and leader, received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University, graduating 1st in his department and 7th in his class, a Masters from New York University and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He rose to the position of Division Chief of Research Facilities at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA and left to found Engineering Development Laboratory, Inc.(EDL), Newport News, VA, a 30 year old company. During his career, he was one of a team of specialists who designed the F15 fighter wing, supervised the building of the Tech House at NASA/Langley, and his company designed and flew 5 human physiological research equipment systems aboard 2 life sciences space shuttle missions. He received numerous academic awards and achievements including Tau Beta Phi and Phi Beta Kappa at Clemson University. Ross was a longtime member and Chairman of Christopher Newport University Physics and Computer Sciences Advisory Board, member and Chairman of the Newport News Planning Commission, member and President of the Waterman's Museum, and served on several Virginia Governor's Task Forces. Ross authored and contributed to several technical papers during his career, most recently "Human Vagal Baroreflex Mechanisms in Space", The Journal of Physiology (Goble et.al.). He was a considerate and understanding man who always found the best in everyone and in every situation. He lived his life for others. He will be missed and remembered by everyone he touched. Ross was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Georgeann Allen. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Mabel (Mabs) Fimple Goble, 3 children Deborah Noble and husband Jay, Pamela Patterson and husband Steve, and Gregory Ross and wife Marie to treasure his memory. He dearly loved his 6 grandchildren, Clinton, Allison, and Brittany Noble, Elyse and Nicole Patterson, Sarah Goble and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by Peninsula Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 11 from 6 - 7:30 pm at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. The funeral service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, Yorktown, Va., Wednesday, June 12 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow.
