NEWPORT NEWS - Samuel Sokol, a Peninsula resident for 55 years died on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the age of 83. Born in 1929 to Benjamin and Sophia Carchman Sokol, Sam was one of eight children. Following graduation from high school, Sam served in the United States Army for three years, spending most of his enlistment in Germany. He graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He began his career with NASA, Langley Research Center in 1958 and continued there until his retirement in 1993. Sam and his wife Betty were active in the Hampton Frolics promoting Big Bands at Buckroe Beach and the Movies on the beach. They started the NASA Country-Western dances. Sam and Betty organized and performed with the Two-Steppin Panhandlers. They traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad. Sam made many friends while working at the Hampton Coliseum. He will be missed by his Bingo Buddies at Super K-Mart. He is survived by his wife, Betty Bailey; three daughters, Rhonda Lugar and her husband, Stephen, Karen Sokol all of Annandale, VA, and Anne Rogers and her husband, John, of Gardiner, ME; a brother, Abe Sokol of Boca Raton, FL; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Samantha Lugar of Annandale, VA; two step-children, James (Jim) Bailey, and Jennifer Meads and her husband, Terry, of Hampton; two step-grandchildren, Shane Meads and his wife, Sarah, of Charlotte, NC, and Nicholas Meads of Hampton; and one step-great-granddaughter, Maggie Meads of Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents; six of his brothers and sisters; and his first wife, Bea Sokol. The family would like to give thanks to the nursing staff of the Gardens at Warwick Forest.
