NEWPORT NEWS - Sarah D. Ingram, 85, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, at Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Hampton Virginia after a brief illness. She was born on July 14, 1928 to Fannie and Fred Drummond in Pleasantville, New Jersey. She graduated from Huntington High School, earned a Bachelors Degree from Winston Salem State University, Winston Salem, North Carolina and later earned a Masters degree from Indiana University, Bloomington Indiana. Mrs. Ingram started her teaching career in Newport News, Virginia at Booker T. Washington Elementary School and was the first African American teacher at Riverside Elementary School. Mrs. Ingram ended her career at Briarfield Elementary School after 37 years of touching the lives of hundreds of children. She married John H. Ingram Jr. on October 3, 1953 and from this union two children were born, John H. Ingram III of Newport News, Virginia and Rhea V. Ingram of Centreville, Virginia. She was a long time member of First Church Newport News (Baptist), where she sang with the Serenity Choir and also served as a greeter. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; Inc. Her husband, as well as sisters, Theresa D. Sadler and Jessie D. Holmes; her brother, Willis R. Drummond; and her niece Chenita V. Holmes, predeceased her. Survivors include her two children; her brother, Fred E. Drummond (Peggy) of Purcellville, Virginia; sister-law, Alfreda Drummond; a host of nieces and nephews; one great-great nephew; and other relatives and friends who loved her dearly. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13, at 11:00 AM at First Church of Newport News (Baptist), 2300 Wickham Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Omega Omega Ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Rd, Hampton, Virginia. O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
