NEWPORT NEWS - Winifred Cordova Roane Shackleford was born January 3, 1916. She passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014. She was an elementary school teacher for 41 years; 26 years with King and Queen County Public Schools and 15 years with York County Public Schools. Her church affiliations include Union Prospect Baptist Church in Cologne, Mercy Seat Baptist Church and Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple both in Hampton. Winifred served as an organist and choir director for many years assisting several churches and gospel groups. She was a member of the Omega Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing, traveling and cosmetology. Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Roane and Genolia Jones Roane; sisters, Florence A. Marshall, Violet S. Lawson and Leora A. Brown and brother, Bradford H. Roane. Those she leaves to cherish her memory are nieces and nephews, Dr. William B. Lawson (Rose Mary), Thomas H. Lawson Jr. (Valarie), Sheryll Wilson-Lawson (Ronald), Arthur K. Roane (Michelle), Raymond C. Roane (Ranata), Sharon Roane, Madeline Roane, Denise Lawson, Bradford Roane II, Linda Spradley, Janice Lathan, Theresa Harrison, Irevia Howard and James Marshall III; aunt, Saphelia Woody; sister-in-law, AnnieMae Roane and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Union Prospect Baptist Church, Cologne. Interment in the church cemetery. The viewing will be 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday at the J.K. Redmond Funeral Home and 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the church.
