James Alvin Abbott
James Alvin Abbott of Troy, Virginia, died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Ruxton The Village Nursing Home in Fork Union, Virginia, after a long illness.
Mr. Abbott was born October 2, 1927, in Greenwood, Virginia, son of the late James Frank and Elsie Noble Abbott. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Hankins Abbott; two brothers, Wayne Abbott and Raymond Abbott; and three sisters, Marie Taylor, Garnett Barton and Ruby Pollock.
He is survived by three children, Linda Lynch of Gates, North Carolina, Daniel Abbott of Lowell, Florida, and J. Michael Abbott of Scottsville, Virginia. He is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Brooke of Charlottesville, Virginia and Joline Ewell of Greensboro, North Carolina; six grand-children, several great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Abbott was a retired plumber and served aboard the naval ship USS Kearsarge during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 1827 and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Mr. Abbott loved country music. In his younger years, he was in a Blue Grass band which performed for local dances, and he also played at Carnegie Hall as well as the Grand Ole Opry. He could play most stringed instruments, his favorite being the Mandolin. He was a self-taught musician and his first instrument was a "banjo" made from an old cigar box with horse hair for strings.
The family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Ruxton nursing home for the wonderful care they provided Mr. Abbott during his stay.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to organizations that support senior citizens and their care, or your local volunteer rescue squad.
The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
