Walter Scott Curtis, 82, of Ruckersville, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013, at Hospice of the Piedmont-Hospice House in Charlottesville. He was born on June 5, 1930, in New York, New York, to Mr. Aubrey Scott Curtis and Mildred Mitchell Curtis. Walter served his country in the United States Air Force from 1948 until 1979. He was a Vietnam veteran where he earned the Bronze Star and was also the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor. He served on the Presidential Flight crew for Lyndon B. Johnson. Walter was also a licensed private pilot. After retiring from the United States Air Force, Walter continued service to his country by way of working for the United States Navy for 15 years. From boyhood, he worked the farm in Remington with his Mother and four siblings and was a lifelong member of his boyhood church (Mount Holly Baptist). He was an avid baseball player in his youth and was set to sign with the Dodgers but chose to serve this nation selflessly. After all, he was an avid New York Yankees fan! Survivors include his devoted wife, Ellie Louise Curtis of Ruckersville; his son and his wife of Sumerduck, Robert and Juanita Curtis; his daughter of Gastonia, North Carolina, Rebecca Pennington; and his son, Jerry Forrest Curtis of Stafford County. He is also survived by his brother, William Curtis of Sumerduck; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Edna Mae Garrigan; his two brothers, Ray Curtis and Roger Curtis; and his son, Walter Jeffery Curtis. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the Mount Holly Baptist Church, 6172 Sumerduck Road, Remington, VA 22734, with the Reverend Chaz Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Walter may be made to Martha Jefferson Hospital, c/o MJH Foundation, 500 Martha Jefferson Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22911, honoring the nurses who cared for him. Proceeds will benefit the Nursing Initiatives at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
